No matter what time he arrived for his appointment he was seen an hour later. He spoke to the administrator about it, he chewed out the doc, and even threatened to bill him for the wait time (he was a lawyer, and had billable hours down!). Finally he found a new doc.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13833349073703526334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3199510273279443038.post-37038613931657917252009-10-16T04:03:44.891-07:002009-10-16T04:03:44.891-07:00I want to limelight that the whole nation is debat...I want to limelight that the whole nation is debating over health care issues but they reform many other issues, from affordability to access. one crucial element that has been largely missing from the discussion: prevention. That is, how to help Americans stay or become healthy. the need is to take an in-depth look at the type of health care system that we really want in this country and at how our individual lifestyle choices impact our health.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13833349073703526334noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3199510273279443038.post-23955836438693705732009-07-15T04:49:42.352-07:002009-07-15T04:49:42.352-07:00Great rant. Now if we can only get 360 million people to read it we could get some real change. :-)

BTW: As I recall from living in Canada a few years ago. There is a two tier system there as well.

most of the stuff you hear 'inside' the US about how bad government run healthcare systems are and how long the waiting lists are comes from people that have never lived anywhere else.

From my (almost) 2 years in Brazil I can say that the system here has the US beat hands down in healthcare for the masses. Especially since it is a country with so many other inequalities.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09019797901088833714noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3199510273279443038.post-69125925156250957132009-07-11T15:34:26.420-07:002009-07-11T15:34:26.420-07:00Hey there...

My point is that however the system is run, it has to deny resources somehow.

While I think that on balance, a socialised healthcare system is the least worst approach (by a whisker), it's hardly beyond criticism, and I've seen similar things to what you describe myself.

Note that it's the rich that get the gravyHealthItNerdhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01421518383586202894noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3199510273279443038.post-33664233854095554542009-05-03T09:28:00.000-07:002009-05-03T09:28:00.000-07:00It's not just socialised medicine that makes peopl...It's not just socialised medicine that makes people wait. I was a member of a large HMO, and I waited on crutches for five weeks for an MRI I told them I had to have in the ER -- I have had knee surgery, and I told them they were going to have to look via MRI. It took two weeks for the referral to get to radiology, then another three weeks to schedule.

Your math prowess is impressive -- but I've also had the honor to work in a socialised system to help them to reduce wait times and prevent treatment errors. The problem there? The way they were scheduling. This was in a rad onc clinic -- and they were scheduling backwards -- in other words, they would schedule treatment 41, then 40, then 39 . .. and if they got to 2 and had a difference in time they would scrap it all and start over. No wonder it would take half a day to even get a patient scheduled there! Then I was lambasted for my 'seemigly efficient American approach.'

My approach was neither -- it was the workflow advocated by the system they were using!

The unfortunate reality can be gleaned from the line of a song --

The rich stay healthy while the sick stay poor.Jamiehttp://www.emrandehr.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3199510273279443038.post-36105885043554044152009-01-18T13:24:00.000-08:002009-01-18T13:24:00.000-08:00Want to really save on healthcare? You get paid for just having knowledge. Magic. I will however (in my biased opinion) say that it is well governed.

The report that you mention goes on to cluelessly explain openEHR as a software development organization which show a COMPLETE lack of investigation.

I actually know some of the authors and was very disappointed with the quality of the report. It seems that academics just need to PUBLISH something in order to maintain their career. How sad that this is the case.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09019797901088833714noreply@blogger.com
